Zotero collections to Citavi groups or categories

Need Answer

Hi,

How can I import my Zotero collections and sub-collections into Citavi 6 as categories or groups for example? Is there any way for doing so?

Additionally, my library in Zotero had over 20 000 items. When I exported it to Citavi, i had 1900 references. Does this mean that not all my references are included? I cannot identify because the collections disappeared.

Hi ElSayed,

Thank you for your question and welcome to Citavi!

Please use the BibTeX format to export your references from Zotero. As the Zotero collections are not part of the export, Citavi unfortunately cannot import them.

If you are working with several collections, I'd recommend exporting one collection after the other.

When you then import it in Citavi, you can assign a category to the newly imported references.

Kind regards,

Jana

Hi, I use both Zotero and Citavi. I would recommend using groups for Zotero collections (rather than categories). Categories can be organized as a tree structure and are more useful when structuring the online of a paper. The way I see them, groups are more like loose groupings and are more akin to Zotero collections.

Hi Jana,

Thanks for your reply. While transferring each category alone, I noticed that not all files are imported into Citavi, however, i followed all the steps. Only some of the files get to be transferred! Do you have any suggestions for this or I'd have to make the rest manually?

Thanks for your time,

ElSayed

Hi ElSayed,

If you chose a cloud project, please note that only PDF files with up to 100MB and other files with up too 50MB can be uploaded as attachments to the cloud.

If this is not the case for the missing files, kindly send me a exported bib-file and its corresponding folder (with the attached files).

To transfer the files, please use our secure upload service

https://www.citavi.com/transfer

So that we can match the files to the issue, please include the ticket ID #133867in the message field of the upload form.

We will treat the files confidentially and delete them immediately once the investigation is complete.

Thank you and kind regards,

Jana

Hi ElSayed,

Thank you very much for your files.

I could reproduce the issue that PDF files were not imported for references, to which a snapshot was additionally attached in Zotero.

I have informed my colleague about the issue and will let you know when we have fixed it.

Zotero creates snapshots by downloading the website. Citavi unfortunately cannot display those snapshots.

Please replace the missing snaphots by saving the website as PDF file in Citavi.

Kind regards,

Jana

Thanks, Jana.

Maybe then it is a good idea to delete the snapshots from Zotero before exporting the data? And the references in Zotero include the URL anyway. So, it might not affect much!

Hi ElSayed,

We have already fixed the issue in an internal version of Citavi. The bugfix will be included in the upcoming beta version. Please have an eye on the news section of the welcome screen in Citavi where we inform about updates.

In the meantime, deleting a snapshots in Zotero before the export would be a good workaround.

Thanks for your patience!

Kind regards,

Jana
