Word add-in Citavi greyed out - none of the existing solutions helped!!

Hi there, I've tried everything on this forum and in the citavi manual to get the add-in to work without luck. I always get the same error "Can't find project or library" upon opening word, new or existing documents.

I have also checked the Visual Basic editor Tools> References and tried to find a "MISSING" reference, but none were missing.


Please help! would really like to get this to work and want to purchase a licensed citavi, however the add-in is detrimental to my work!

I have citavi version 6.1, microsoft office word 2010 and windows 8.

Hi Eveline,

Please take the following steps:

1) Repair the .NET Framework installation

Use the Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool which can be downloaded from the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

2) Run the Windows System File Checker

  1. On the "Start" menu, type "cmd.exe". Right-click the only search result (cmd.exe) and then click "Run as administrator".
  2. Type sfc.exe /scannow and press "Enter". The System File Checker will run, which may take a while.
  3. Afterwards, check for Windows Updates and install any necessary updates.
  4. Restart your computer.

3) Uninstall Citavi (This will not affect your projects, settings or license key.)

4) Repair your Office installation. This ensures that Citavi can find the correct entries in the Windows Registry when you reinstall it:


In Windows, switch to the Control Panel.

Click Programs and Features.

Select Microsoft Office 2010.

Click Change.

Select Repair.

5) Make sure that Word isn't running.

6) Install Citavi.

Dear Citavi-Support!


I have exactly the same Problem with my Citavi 6.1. The error message appears every time I open Word and the functions are greyed out. Multiple reinstalls and doing the 6 steps you mentioned did not work and the problem stays the same (like screenshot from Eveline N.)

Can you pls provide additional Support?

Or maybe can describe where (or from what file/conflict) the error comes from, so I can investigate with my company's IT.
