Word add-in backups not working

I am using Citavi cloud. When closing a Word document I am prompted to save however I can find no Citavi backup of the document in my \documents\Citavi 6 folder or subfolders. Does a cloud project save Word backups to some other location? Thank you.

Hello Michael

You should find the backup copy of your Word file here:

C:\Users\YOUR.NAME\Documents\Citavi 6\Backup\NAME-OF-PROJECT\NAME-OF-WORD-FILE\[Citavi Backup] NAME-OF-WORD-FILE YYYY-MM-DD hh-mm-ss.docx

If not, which Citavi version are you using? The four-digit version number of the Citavi version you have installed can be found in the Help > About Citavi menu.

Kind regards,

Peter

Hello Peter,

Thank you for your quick reply. I tried some different senarios. The Word doc was backing up 5 days ago. The change I made was copying my project to the Citavi cloud. I have copied it back to my hard drive, but still no backup, although the Citavi project did backup to the directory you indicated. I think the problem is with OneDrive (OD). My document resides on OD. What is 'odd' is 5 days ago, prior to making my project a cloud project, Citavi was creating backups of the document. I've made no change to my OD settings. If I save my document to my desktop, Citavi does create a backup. Of note, my desktop is also synced to OD. When working in Citavi I disable OD sync. In conclusion, Citavi is again creating backup of my Word doc. My only guess is that perhaps something changed in the OD settings as a result of one of Microsoft's some what frequent updates. Finally, I'd like to echo others in saying how well designed and useful Citavi is! Kudos to your entire team!

Kind regards,

Michael

Hello Michael,

Thanks a lot for your kind words!

Please check if the directory Citavi wants to use for backups (this could be a folder inside OneDrive as well) still exists on your computer:

Hello Peter,

I verified the backup directory exists. If I open the Word doc directly by double clicking the file causing Word to open, a Citavi backup is created. If I open Word first, and then the file, no backup is created. The file 1st method causes Word to show the doc is "saved to this PC", the 2nd method shows "saved to Onedrive". The doc resides in Onedrive on my PC and is flagged to always be available (no placeholder). So, I will continue with the 1st method, when opening the doc file. Thank you again for your assistance and suggestions.

Kind Reards,

Michael

Hello Michael,

I have checked this again: You have found a bug. It shouldn't matter where the DOCX resides. We will fix this in Citavi 6.3.

Thanks for your report!

Kind regards,

Peter
