Switching between reference and knowledge items

Need Answer

There are times in my work - especially at the beginning of a projects where I need to switch between my reference and my knowledge items. Each time I go from reference to knowledge item back to my reference, I have to go through the trouble of searching for my reference in my reference list again. I know it is a small problem but it is very annoying. I have a long list of references and having to go through them every time I add a knowledge item is annoying.

Dear Kathy,

Thank you for your message.

Please use the history feature to return to the reference which you have worked with previously.

Kind regards

Jana

Unfortunately, this does not work (please see attachment) Right now, the history only shows the topmost reference in my list even though I have been working on a different paper for days (and I have never read the topmost paper in my reference list). Even more irritating, it happens no matter what other feature I move to in Citavi. If I create a task - I have to go back and find my paper--If I look at my keywords--I have to go back and find my paper....

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Citavi but having my train of thought and workflow interrupted all of the time is annoying enough that I am looking for other knowledge management software. And I really like this software

Dear Kathy,

Thank you for your reply and your screenshot.

In the history, all references are listed which you have looked at within the same session. If you close Citavi at the end of the day, the list is reset.

Your screenshot shows the selected reference "Xia,...". The PDF of the reference is open in full screen. Or do you open it in an external PDF reader?

You are now working with the PDF in full screen and you create a task for a selected passage of the PDF.

To look at your other tasks for this paper, please click "Show reference" on the top right of the full screen PDF window.

Change the view to show all panels (see no. 5). The reference should be selected automatically in the reference list.

Additionally, you could label the reference with a flag.

Kind regards,

Jana

Hi Jana,

Thank you so much for your quick response. It is very much appreciated and thank you for the resolution.

I had another project where I never had this issue. I could easily switch between reference, knowledge and task without a problem. I searched the settings multiple times to understand why this project was different but I was not able to resolve it. Clicking the view icon, as suggested (see no. 5) resolved the issue and I can now switch seamlessly between each function.

I would also like to add a comment on the suggestion to set a flag. I do use the flags for different purposes and am able to filter my reading list to find flagged papers which is nice...but I find the flags so small and without contrast that they do not provide a useful visual cue (for me) if I just want to scroll through my list. Is there a link to add suggestions for future versions of Citavi? I would love the ability to color the background of the references in the reference list.

Dear Kathy,

Thanks a lot for the good news that changing the view did help!

Thank you also for your suggestion. You could also filter your list of references just for flagged items.

Your wish to color references in the reference list is already included in our internal wish list for our developers.

I have added your vote there.

All the best,

Jana
