Migrating references, PDFs and categories from Papers 3

Hello,

I would like to migrate my entirely library of references and PDFs from papers 3 to Citavi. There are two major hurdles that I would need your assistance from:

1. Papers 3 stores PDFs with anonymous names in a series of discrete folders. While I can export my library as a RIS or Endnote file, how can I reconnect all my PDF locations in Citavi?

2. Is there a way to reproduce the folder structure of Papers 3 and categorize the newly imported files in Citavi according to this folder structure?

Thanks!

Francesco.

Hello Francesco,

Please excuse our delayed reply.

1. Does the exported RIS file also contain the path to the location where the PDFs are saved on your computer? This path will also be imported in Citavi and the reference is linked to this PDF on your hard drive (in a local Citavi project). You will see the link on the "Reference" tab indicated by [Local], see manual.

2. You could just keep the previous folder structure and links to the PDFs. However, if you wish to import your PDF in CItavi's attachment folder, there is no folder structure possible.

As an alternative to keep the folder structure, you could import your PDFs and let Citavi search for metadata without importing via RIS with this Add-on. This folder structure will be used to create a category system in Citavi.

Kind regards

Jana

Dear Jana,

Thanks for your reply.

1. Yes there are paths, they are however a) indicated as LAN paths and b) unable to connect. For example:

358bcecb00e5c1d5e20e4d0ad7d71c5d

Can I automatically change this LAN address to a local address? I tried to do that in the Project properties via the "repair paths" options, but maybe it cannot convert LAN paths to local paths?

2. I am sorry if I used the confusing term of "folder". What I mean is the category structure in Papers 3. I would like to know if I can import that category structure (along with the PDFs that are assigned the categories) in from papers 3 to the category structure in Citavi.

Thanks!

Francesco.

Dear Francesco,

1. Before exporting the RIS files in Papers 3, please first move your Papers Library to your hard drive on which your Citavi project is saved, too.

2. Unfortunately, the folder or category structure will not be exported.

Kind regards,

Jana
