Citavi Style Editor problem: wrong relation between two independent fields

Hi

I want to make a custom citation style.

When i change the format of "Title" field of "Book" component to "italic", strangely format of "Title" field in "Contribution in conference proceedings" component also changes to italic and vice versa.

It's very annoying. has anyone similar problem?

thanks.

Hi Rafael,

Thanks for your question!

Components are reusable within a citation style, but it is critical to understand that every instance of a component is identical — if you edit a component in one place, every other instance of it will change as well. If you need the same component in different templates, but with different formatting, you must create a duplicate of it as described in the following manual chapter:

https://www1.citavi.com/sub/manual6/en/index.html?cse_creating_new_components.html

For other rules of thumb for creating citation styles, please see the following manual chapter:

Hi

Thanks a lot for your reply

But i thought that "book " component is independent of "contribution on conference proceedings" component. Am i right?

If they are independent, so their fields are supposed to be independent.

it's very normal situation that "title" field in "book" has different style than "title" in other components.

Can you explain more about that identical component?

Anyway, your solution is right. when i duplicate the fields, i can edit them independently.

maybe the "component" in my mind had wrong meaning.

Hi Rafael,

Thanks for your reply!

Components share the same properties - regardless of reference type.

Please note that the same component may even have a different name if it's found under a different reference type. For example the Author component that appears for the Book reference type refers back to the same Citavi database field as the Director component that appears for the Movie reference.

If you're not sure if a component has been used by other reference types, select the component from the list of components on the left side of the Citation Style Editor. Click the Delete button. A warning will appear that shows where else the component was used. Click Cancel.

When I did my own citation style, I deleted all standard components and created new ones giving them functional names, indicating the reference type they refer to and any other restrictions after the slash. I semi-understand why Citavi doesn't do that by default – it is probably unworkable if you have to maintain over 7000 citation styles – but I highly recommend it for your own citation style in the long run.
