Citavi is not good at finding bibliographic information

The bibliographic information of many PDFs cannot be found, even when the DIO number is filled in. However, the same PDF can be recognized by Zotero. There are many examples, like:

"A Wearable Robotic Object Manipulation Aid for the Visually Impaired"

"Real-Time Robust 3D Plane Extraction for Wearable Robot Perception and Control"

……

The bibliographic information of all these PDFs can be accurately found by Zotero but cannot be found by Citavi even with DIO filled in.

It is a paid software but performs worse than a free one. This is really disappointing because it is a basic but very important function.

I do not know what's the problem with it but really hope this could be improved.

Dear Shibo,

Thank you for your message. I am sorry that you had to experience problems when searching for DOIs.

We had a lokk at the DOIs of the titles and could import them successfully, see screenshot:

  • 10.1109/NSENS.2018.8713628
  • 10.1115/DMD2018-6964

  • Could you please let me know the version of Citavi you’re using? The four-digit version number of the Citavi version you have installed can be found in the "Help" > "About Citavi" menu.

Did you manage to import any DOI before or does this happen to all your PDFs and DOIs entered manually?

    Kind regards,

    Jana

I do not how you add the papers to Citavi, but I go to the website and download the PDFs on my computer. Then add the PDFs to Citavi, but the bibliographic information is not obtained. However, the same procedures done on Zotero work well. Zotero can get the bibliographic information as soon as I add the PDFs. In addition, even I manually add the DIO number to the DIO field belonging to the reference, the bibliographic information is not updated either. I also tried to use the picker function to add the paper directly through the website, but it does not work either.

    Dear Shibo,

Thank you very much for your PDF file. Citavi cannot find a DOI in the PDF file and therefore is unable to import the metadata.

I have forwarded your PDF file to our developers so that they can have a look if the PDF import of IEEE PDFs without DOI might be improved.

In the meantime, please search the DOI directly in Citavi to import the metadata or use the Citavi Picker (please click the Picker icon you see on the website behind the DOI). As the Picker import did also not work in your case, kindly let me know which browser you are using. Does the Picker icon not appear at all or is no information imported?

    Kind regards,

    Jana

I use firefox, and I can see the Picker icon as shown below.

I clicked it but no response. I don't know if this is Citavi's problem or my computer's problem.

    Dear Shibo,

The green checkmark indicates that the reference is already in your project.

Therefore, Citavi will not import it anymore but highlight the reference with this DOI in your project.

Please delete the reference, refresh the website with the DOI and click the Picker icon again.

    Does the import work now?

    Kind regards,

    Jana

    Yeah, it works. Thank you.

Can I give some other suggestions?

For example, In the PDF reader,

    1. if there is a jump back button for us to return the previous page, It can be better. Sometimes after we click the [number] of the references in the paper, the page jumps, but It is not easy to go back.

    2. Can there be one more highlight color(without save as knowledge item)? Sometimes we may want to emphasize some content in another colour without saving it as knowledge. Only yellow colour seems not enough. Or the underline function is also fine to be added.

    3. Can we open two PDFs at the same time?

    Dear Shibo,

Thank you very much for your suggestions.

Would you mind creating new "Ideas" for them in our forum?

This helps other users find your ideas and to vote for them more easily.

Thank you very much and kind regards,

    Jana

    Dear Shibo,

Our developers had a look at your PDF file and found a way to extract the IEEE article ID to search for metadata.

You will see the improvement in our upcoming beta version.

Please have a look at the news section of the welcome screen where we inform you about updates.

Thank you for pointing us to this issue!

    Kind regards,

    Jana

I also had the same experience. Because of that, I first import into Zotero, and then from Zotero to Citavi. I am using version 6.3.4.0

    Dear Serena,

    Thank you for your message.

In case you cannot search for any DOI from within Citavi, please follow our suggestions in this article.

If this happens only with some DOIs, kindly let us know for which you do not receive any results.

    Kind regards,

    Jana
