Can no longer open References in pdf App using the Tools menu

I've run into a small problem. Until recently, when working with a reference, I've been able to open the reference in my pdf editor software using one of the Tools in the reference viewer. I am using Nitro Pro as my pdf editor and it has worked fine with Citavi until recently. However, now when I try to open the reference, a Windows File Explorer box appears asking me instead to save the file.

Any idea why this is occurring and, more importantly, how I can fix it?

Hi David,

Thanks for your questions.

This is by design. External annotations and edits to the local cache copy of the attachments could never be synchronized with the cloud. The changes to the local copy were gone again at the next login.

Attachments in cloud projects must therefore now be saved locally under a different name in order to open this copy with an external program.

Thanks - quick response, Susanne! Follow on question - what I'm trying to do is to rotate images in the pdf so that I can see them more easily. If I save the attachment locally and make that change, will it also change within Citavi? If not, is there any way to rotate the image from within Citavi?

Hi David,

Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, this feature does not exist in Citavi.

You would need to save the attachment locally, do the rotation, and then add the attachment back to the cloud project.

Afterwards, you can delete the old version of the attachment in the project.

Hello Susanne,

Can you please elaborate on "saving files locally under a different name" in order to have pdf attachments open in an external reader, please?

Does this mean I need two pdf attachments for a single citavi entry, one in the cloud and one locally? What is the point of saving attachments to the cloud then if edits cannot be saved and synced there as well?

Does this mean I have to do this manually for every attachment? My PhD thesis has over a thousand references, most with attachments. I need to resave all of these locally now in order to work with them in my pdf reader?

Can you please explain in detail what needs to be done in order to work with pdfs in an external reader, or point me to a thread where this is explained.

Best wishes,

Bradley
